  • What are the differences between a Registered Psychologist, a Registered Provisional Psychologist and a Canadian Certified Counsellor?

There are distinct differences between a registered psychologist, a registered provisional psychologist, and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). These differences primarily relate to their qualifications, scope of practice, and professional designations.

    Registered Psychologist:

Qualifications: Psychologists in Alberta hold a master's or doctoral degree in psychology (typically a Ph.D. or Psy.D.) and have completed extensive training in psychological assessment, diagnosis, and psychotherapy.

Scope of Practice: Psychologists are licensed to provide various mental health services, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for different psychological conditions and concerns. They can work with individuals of all ages, couples, and families.

Regulation: Psychologists are regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists and must adhere to strict ethical and professional standards.

    Registered Provisional Psychologist:

Qualifications: Provisional psychologists are individuals who have completed their schooling in psychology but are in the process of obtaining full licensure. They are completing their required supervised hours of practice.

Scope of Practice: Provisional psychologists can provide psychological services but usually do so under the supervision of a fully licensed psychologist. They may have limitations on the types of clients and conditions they can treat.

Regulation: They are also regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists and must adhere to specific requirements during their provisional period.

    Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC):

Qualifications: Canadian Certified Counsellors are professionals who have completed a master's degree in counselling or a related field. They must also meet specific training and experience requirements.

Scope of Practice: CCCs provide counselling and psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, and families. They often focus on helping clients with various emotional, behavioural, and mental health concerns.

Certification: The Canadian Certified Counsellor designation is granted by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), a professional organization for counsellors and psychotherapists in Canada.

It's important to note that while the College of Alberta Psychologists regulates psychologists and provisional psychologists, CCCs are certified by the CCPA, which is a different professional organization. Each professional has a role in providing mental health services, but their training and scope of practice can vary. When seeking mental health services, it's essential to consider your specific needs and choose a professional whose qualifications and expertise align with your requirements.
